Breaking GMs Mary Barra becomes first female CEO at global automaker
Mary Barra is set to become the first woman to lead a global automaker. The executive will succeed General Motors Dan Akerson, a former private equity bigwig who was appointed in 2009 to help lead the company out of bankruptcy. Akerson, 65, will be retiring in January, although rumors have been swirling about his potential replacement for months.Akerson himself previously noted that a female CEO at one of the Detroit Three was "inevitable."
Barra, 51, has been at GM since age 18. Most recently, she has been executive vice president of Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain. Barra has previously served in various positions within the company over her 33 years, including vice president of Global Manufacturing Engineering, executive director of Competitive Operations Engineering, and vice president of Global Human Resources.
We reported just four weeks ago that Akerson probably wasnt leaving until next year, and that a dedicated search for his replacement - widely believed to be either Barra or President of GM North America Mark Reuss - had not yet begun. In the official press release announcing Barras appointment, GM notes that Akerson pulled ahead his retirement date after his wife was diagnosed with advanced cancer. That said, the news of Barra taking over isnt entirely shocking, as Akerson himself previously noted that a female CEO at one of the Detroit Three was "inevitable."
For his part, Reuss, 50, will slot into Barras role, giving up his position as executive vice president and president of North American operations.
In other appointment news, Dan Ammann, 41, GMs CFO and executive vice president, has been named its president, with Chevrolet and Cadillac reporting directly to him, as well as GM Financial.
For the rest of the details, check out the official press release below.
Mary Barra to Become Next CEO; Dan Ammann Named President
2013-12-10
DETROIT â" General Motors today announced that Dan Akerson, who guided todays GM to record profits and dramatic improvement in vehicle quality while closing the chapter on government ownership in the company, will step down as chairman and CEO on Jan. 15, 2014.
Mary Barra, 51, executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain, was elected by the Board of Directors to become the next CEO of the company. Barra will also join the GM Board.
Akerson, 65, pulled ahead his succession plan by several months after his wife was recently diagnosed with an advanced stage of cancer.
The Board also named Theodore (Tim) Solso to succeed Akerson as Chairman. Solso, 66, is the former chairman and CEO of Cummins, Inc., and has been a member of the GM Board since June 2012.
"I will leave with great satisfaction in what we have accomplished, great optimism over what is ahead and great pride that we are restoring General Motors as Americas standard bearer in the global auto industry," Akerson said in a message to employees.
With 33 years of experience at GM, Barra has risen through a series of manufacturing, engineering, and senior staff positions. She is a leader in the companys ongoing turnaround, revitalizing GMs product development process resulting in the launch of critically acclaimed new products while delivering record product quality ratings and higher customer satisfaction.
"With an amazing portfolio of cars and trucks and the strongest financial performance in our recent history, this is an exciting time at todays GM," said Barra. "Im honored to lead the best team in the business and to keep our momentum at full speed."
Dan Ammann, 41, executive vice president and chief financial officer, was named company president and will assume responsibility for managing the companys regional operations around the world. The global Chevrolet and Cadillac brand organizations and GM Financial will also report to Ammann.
Ammann joined GM in 2010 where his first assignment was to manage GMs initial public offering. As CFO, he has led a transformation of GMs finance operations into a world-class organization. He also led the strategy to rebuild the companys captive finance capability through the successful establishment and growth of GM Financial.
"We have a significant opportunity to further integrate and optimize our operations to deliver even better results," said Ammann. "While we have made good progress, we still have much work ahead of us to realize GMs full potential."
Ammann will retain CFO responsibilities at least through the release of the companys fourth quarter and full-year 2013 results in early February 2014. His replacement as CFO will be named later.
Mark Reuss, 50, executive vice president and president, North America, will replace Barra as executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain. Under Reuss watch, GMs North America region has produced consistent profits and improved margins during a product renaissance that includes the launch of award-winning cars and trucks such as the Cadillac ATS, Chevrolet Corvette, Impala and Silverado pickup.
"The drivers seat of designing and engineering the strongest product line up in GMs history is the best seat to have," said Reuss. "Were going to keep the pedal down on GMs product resurgence and keep winning new customers."
Alan Batey, currently senior vice president, Global Chevrolet and U.S. Sales and Marketing, will replace Reuss and is named Executive Vice President and President, North America. Batey, 50, joined GMs Vauxhall operation in 1979 and held several sales, service and marketing positions around the world. In his current position, he has developed the Chevrolet brands Find New Roads advertising campaign and has overseen a sweeping upgrade of retail sales and service operations at hundreds of U.S. dealerships.
"North America is the foundation of the GM turnaround story and Im honored to help continue what Mark started," said Batey. "We remain committed to delivering the worlds best retail experience to match the worlds best cars and trucks."
The company also announced that Steve Girsky, 51, vice chairman, Corporate Strategy, Business Development and Global Product Planning, will move to a senior advisor role until leaving the company in April 2014. He will remain on the GM Board of Directors.
Girsky led GMs turnaround plan for Europe that has put that regions operations back on a path to profitability. He has also put GMs OnStar unit at the forefront of in-vehicle connectivity and helped create GM Ventures to speed the commercialization of new technologies in GM vehicles.
"I share Dans pride for what the company has accomplished and his sense of optimism for a bright future," said Girsky. "This team is united in its commitment to building on the foundation that we have established."
Under Akersons leadership, GM made swift progress as the company transformed from being majority owned by U.S. Treasury to being publicly traded and investment grade rated.
"My goals as CEO were to put the customer at the center of every decision we make, to position GM for long term success and to make GM a company that America can be proud of again," Akerson said. "We are well down that path, and Im certain that our new team will keep us moving in that direction."
Akerson was named GM Chairman and CEO on September 1, 2010. He joined GM in 2009 as a member of its Board of Directors. Since the companys November 2010 Initial Public Offering, GM has recorded 15 consecutive quarters of profitability, has earned this year the best overall initial vehicle quality scores of any auto manufacturer, and has re-invested nearly $9 billion and created or retained more than 25,000 jobs at its U.S plants

Report Nissan Titans upcoming Cummins diesel originally meant for Ram
The Cummins 5.0-liter turbocharged diesel V8 that Ram initially planned to use in its pickup trucks instead will find its way into the 2015 Nissan Titan as an option, Automobile reports. It will be the first time a non-Ram pickup truck will be available with a Cummins diesel engine.
The move comes after Chrysler decided to use a 3.0-liter V6 EcoDiesel engine designed by VM Motori (which is partially owned by Fiat) due to fuel economy concerns with the Cummins engine. Chrysler wanted its 2014 Ram 1500 trucks to achieve at least 26 miles per gallon. "Our simulations were showing 23 to 24 mpg [for the 5.0-liter engine]," says Mike Cairns, head of engineering at Ram.
Nissan had plans in 2008 to team with Cummins for a diesel engine for its Titan, when there were also plans for the second-generation Titan to share its platform with the Dodge Ram 1500, according to Automotive News, but that didnt pan out after Chryslers bankruptcy in 2009.
Now that the dust is settling, lets put the pieces together. The 2014 Ram 1500 will get the EcoDiesel V6 as an option, making 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque; heavy-duty Rams can be equipped with the Cummins 6.7-liter diesel I6, which makes 350-385 hp and 660-850 lb-ft depending on the state of tune; and the 2015 Nissan Titan, a light-duty pick-up, will get the Cummins 5.0-liter V8 as an option, which makes roughly 300 hp and 500 lb-ft.
While the Nissan Titan currently poses no threat to Rams truck operation - Nissan sold just 10,020 Titans this year through July while Ram sold 201,633 trucks during the same period - we like the idea of a light-duty pickup with a torque-rich diesel V8. Nissans research shows that truck owners feel the same way, and 17 percent of them would consider switching brands if a light-duty truck was offered with a diesel V8, Automobile reports. That works out to 300,000 customers per year.

Will global automakers drop local JV partners if Chinas government says they can
Chinese economic policies could be in for a big change, as President Xi Jinping pushes the communist country to open its domestic markets even further. That could mean big things for the auto industry, especially when it comes to the countrys far-reaching joint-venture system.
According to Chinese law, foreign automakers may only maintain a fifty-fifty partnership with their domestic counterparts. But with Jinpings push for openness leading to potential free-trade deals, that policy could be relaxed (or eradicated all together) in short order. Whats an automaker to do?
Well, in BMWs case, stay the course. Automotive News Europe reports that, despite the grumblings about the JV policy changes, the German manufacturer has resigned its agreement with Brilliance through 2028. This is made doubly remarkable by the fact that BMW signed the extension over three years before it was set to expire.
Prevailing logic says thats because these joint ventures allow foreign automakers to operate boots-on-the-ground manufacturing operations that can help drive sales inside the PRC. For BMW, thats key to becoming the top dog in Chinas booming luxury market, notes Automotive News Europe.
BMW isnt the only manufacturer thats extended its partnership for the extended future. Volkswagen inked a deal with its partners in 2012 that will run through the next two decades.
That still leaves a huge number of manufacturers with partnerships up in the air, though. What do you think manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz and General Motors will do if given the option to increase their stake, stage a takeover or divorce from their joint venture partners? Have your say in Comments.

Jaguar to offer high performance SVR models like Land Rover
At the Goodwood Festival of Speed this past weekend, Land Rover previewed its upcoming performance version of the Range Rover Sport. Only instead of wearing the R-S badge that adorns the most hardcore of Jaguar models, the performance SUV from JLRs Special Operations unit introduced the letters SVR. And now, it seems that badge is here to stay.
Following the Range Rover Sport SVR, a new report from Motor Authority now says that Jaguar Land Rover will use those letters to distinguish the top-of-the-line performance models from both marques moving forward. As such, we might expect SVR models of the upcoming Jaguar XE compact sedan and Land Rover Discovery Sport, as well as potential new performance models based on the new F-Type and next-generation XF.
If accurate, the move would seem to separate Jaguar in particular from the R-S badge that has adorned performance models like the XFR-S and XKR-S. Both Audi and Porsche use the letters RS to distinguish its most hardcore models as well (e.g. Audi RS7 Sportback and Porsche 911 GT3 RS). Whether the similarity was a factor in shifting to the SVR moniker, we dont know, but either way, we welcome the arrival of a new generation of Jaguar and Land Rover performance models â" especially if they pack the 575-horsepower version of the companys ubiquitous 5.0-liter supercharged V8. Not incidentally, that delicious powerplant gained a couple of new engine bays to call home at Goodwood as well â" its not just found in the forthcoming Range Rover Sport SVR, its found a home in the F-Type Project 7, too.

2015 Hyundai Sonata
Completely redesigning a vehicle competing in a fiercely contested segment requires delicately balancing styling, performance, safety, efficiency, innovation, passenger comfort and pricing, while simultaneously not alienating model loyalists. In other words, its no simple task.
Automakers generally follow one of two paths. Some take a conservative approach and choose to raise each bar marginally, in an effort to appease all and estrange none. Others strategically take risks and focus on specific attributes in an attempt to shift perception about their vehicle.
With its all-new 2015 Sonata, Hyundai has taken the second approach when overhauling one of its best-selling vehicles. The Korean automaker has executed an impressive number of targeted improvements, yet its also softened some of its predecessors qualities in an attempt to demonstrate greater refinement and position its midsize sedan upscale. Whereas the outgoing car successfully aimed to establish itself as a credible contender in the midsize segment, the new model is gunning for customers that might otherwise be seeking entry-level models from luxury automakers.
Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, is an unusual locale to launch a completely redesigned vehicle â" unless you happen to be Hyundai. The automaker rolled its first new car out of Montgomerys Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) in the southern state in 2005, with its production output hitting 398,000 units in 2013. This year, the plant welcomes assembly of the 2015 Sonata alongside the Elantra, a hot-selling compact sedan that commands 32 percent of its sales. Coming in second place, with 27 percent of the automakers sales, is the four-door, midsize Sonata sedan. Launched in 1998, the all-new 2015 model is a seventh-generation (Hyundai calls it the LF platform) iteration that made its North American debut at this years New York Auto Show.
Rather than toss us the keys in a hotel parking lot, as is common practice, our host gave us a guided tour of HMMA while arranging to have our test cars waiting at the end of the active line. Eager journalists jumped behind the wheel as the sedans crept along a moving conveyor and then drove them out of the factory door for the obligatory photo opportunity.I vaulted into the sportiest and most vibrant of the six new models, a Sport 2.0T sedan painted Urban Sunset.
Following my peers, I vaulted into the sportiest and most vibrant of the six new models (SE, Sport, Limited, Sport 2.0T, Sport 2.0T w/Ultimate, and Eco), a Sport 2.0T sedan painted Urban Sunset with black leather offset with orange piping (the color doesnt translate well in pictures â" think metallic rust if you want to paint a mental picture). While the base SE model is actually cheaper than last years model at $21,960 (including $810 destination), my test car arrives in showrooms with a base price of $29,385 (including destination). It was wearing no options.
Hyundai is very proud of its new Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 styling language, which is said to reek of "modern premium," but Im still a bigger fan of last years exterior that was at once both more aggressive and youthful. Nevertheless, this fresh, conservative look is decidedly more upmarket and it complements the design of the new Genesis sedan, its recently launched big brother. The new sculpture is also sleeker to the wind, with a drag coefficient of just 0.27 thanks to those carefully crafted panels and a near-full underbody tray to manage airflow. (Its important to note the test car shown here is a Sport model, which features a more aggressive front grille and bumper, side chrome molding and side rocker extensions in addition to a unique rear fascia and quad exhaust outlets.)
Despite my need to warm to the exterior, I have far fewer complaints with the interior, which has moved upscale, mimicking many of the design cues of the premium Genesis sedan. Dropping my six-foot, two-inch frame into the supportive sport seats in the 2.0T (which are about twice as comfortable as the flatter seats of non-sport models) reveals a wider center console that gives the occupants a new sense of personal space. There is less dashboard "wrap-around," which adds an impression of openness. By the tape, the new Sonata boasts 106.1 cubic feet of passenger volume and a total interior volume of 122.4 cubic feet, which allows the midsize sedan to be classified as a large car by the EPA.
Materials, as well as fit and finish, are impressive for a vehicle in this price range â" again, trickle-down from the Genesis â" but also required to maintain competitiveness. My Sport model was configured with a meaty flat-bottom steering wheel and textured aluminum trim, which are pleasing to the touch and tasteful (time within a Limited model revealed lamentably fake wood trim that wouldnt fool a kindergartener). In both cases, well-sorted ergonomics meant I wasted no time looking for switchgear.
The Sonatas standard equipment level is generous, with all models fitted with full power accessories, remote keyless entry, premium cloth upholstery and 60/40 split-fold rear seats. Optional equipment, mostly bundled into packages, includes leather upholstery, a panoramic glass moonroof, heated rear seats, Xenon headlights, radar-based cruise control with full stop capability and Hyundais hands-free Smart Trunk, a feature launched on the Genesis sedan. There are no hubcaps in the Sonata lineup, as even the base SE model arrives with 16-inch alloy wheels and 205/65R16 tires (the Sport 2.0T model wears the largest wheel/tire package with 18-inch alloys and 235/45R18 tires). The interior has moved upscale, mimicking many of the design cues of the premium Genesis sedan.
With regards to connectivity, all models come with iPod/USB/AUX inputs, SiriusXM satellite radio and Bluetooth for phones. While the base Sonata lacks a color infotainment display, a five-inch color touchscreen is one model level up with a vibrant eight-inch color display optional. Hyundai is also offering Apple CarPlay integration with certain headunits (late availability) and a 400-watt Infinity premium audio system with next-generation Blue Link telematics.
Not leaving safety out of equation, Hyundai set the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ rating as its target (the Sonata has yet to be officially tested, but the automaker says its confident it will receive the award). In addition to all of the government-mandated safety gear, the sedan arrives with new standard knee airbags and is offered with optional Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Blind Spot Detection (BSD) and Rear Cross-traffic Alert (RCTA).For 2015, the Sonata will be offered with three, four-cylinder engines in the new platform.
Hyundai plotted out a circuitous route on the outskirts of Montgomery that led across highways and two-lane country roads. The weather was lousy, as downpours spoiled most of the best photo opportunities, but traffic was light and the asphalt unbelievably smooth (the only bump in the road was a deceased armadillo â" no kidding).
Up until a few years ago, the midsize sedan segment was accustomed to four- and six-cylinder engine offerings, but Hyundai forged a new path for the class in 2009 when it introduced the sixth-generation Sonata with nothing but a range of four-cylinder engines. The companys logic was sound â" a lower-displacement turbocharged engine can offer identical power and better efficiency, while the smaller packaging requirements of a four-cylinder allow the firewall to be pushed forward, thereby giving more space to the occupants. Hyundai customers have seemed indifferent about the loss of a six-cylinder option, so the automaker hasnt altered its tune. For the 2015 model year, the Sonata will be offered with three, four-cylinder engines in the new platform (the Hybrid will continue to be offered on the previous-generation platform until 2016).
Of the three combustion engines, two are returning to the Sonata after being updated and one is new to the model.
The standard 2.4-liter Theta II GDI four-cylinder engine, which is fitted to the SE, Sport and Limited models, arrives with a new power rating of 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque (last year, it was rated at 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet). Upgraded with Electronic Intake Continuously Variable Valve Timing (E-CVVT), the engine trades in five horsepower and a single pound-foot to offer "better responsiveness in lower-RPM situations where customers spend the majority of their time," says the automaker. It has also been tuned for improved cold-weather performance and reduced emissions. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission sending power to the front wheels. Its preliminary fuel economy ratings are 24 miles per gallon city, 35 highway and 28 combined (the SE model is rated slightly higher, at 25/37/29).
The optional 2.0-liter Theta II turbocharged GDI four-cylinder, which is fitted to the Sport 2.0T models, is also equipped with E-CVVT. It arrives with a new rating of 245 hp and 260 lb-ft (last year, it was rated at 274 hp and 269 lb-ft). The significantly decreased output rating is a result of a new, smaller turbocharger â" less mass means it spools quicker and improves driveability. Like the 2.4-liter, it is mated to a six-speed automatic driving the front wheels. Its fuel economy ratings are 23 city, 32 highway, 26 combined. The optional 2.0-liter turbocharged GDI four-cylinder arrives with a new rating of 245 hp and 260 lb-ft.
Fuel mileage numbers are up very slightly across the Sonata range, when comparing the new engine variants with the old. Those seeking the greatest efficiency this side of the hybrid offering, however, have another option for 2015.
The new engine in the model range is a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four, which will be standard in the Eco variant, and its rated at 177 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Unlike its siblings, the low-displacement powerplant is bolted to an all-new, seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. Its preliminary fuel economy ratings are 28 city, 38 highway, and 32 combined.
To better tailor the powertrain to the driver and driving conditions, all Sonata models are equipped with three drive modes (Eco, Normal and Sport) selectable via a pushbutton switch located just aft of the transmission shift lever. In a nutshell, each configuration alters the engine response, transmission shift points and steering wheel weight to suit the mode. By default, the vehicle starts in Normal each time with a dash light alerting the driver to any changes.
I drove all three models back-to-back in Alabama, and it didnt take long for me to choose my favorite.
The 2.4-liter doesnt feel much different than its predecessor. Good gearing within the automatic transmission allows the naturally aspirated engine to move the 3,252-pound Sonata 2.4 quickly off the line, but it loses some steam once it gets above city speeds. The gearbox is quick to downshift, but it doesnt have the torque to push anyones skull against their head restraints. Although it doesnt have any issue holding highway speeds on grades, passing maneuvers will require planning and plenty of space, especially with a vehicle loaded with four adults and luggage. The 2.4-liter is a decent standard engine, but it wont get anyones juices flowing â" Ill leave it at that.My preferred engine is the 1.6-liter with the turbocharger mated to the DCT. Its a brilliant little combo.
Bolting a smaller turbocharger on the 2.0-liter four definitely removes some of its steam, as I recall last years Sonata 2.0T feeling a bit quicker (Im betting the 2015 version is slower in the 0-60 sprint). The automatic transmission puts in a herculean effort to keep the engine in its powerband, making passing at speed much easier â" but the loss of 29 horses is a blow to performance in the 3,505-pound 2.0T (its the heaviest trim). The upside is that fuel economy on the city cycle, when the turbocharger is most likely to be utilized, is improved over its predecessor. The big downside is that the sportiest Sonata variant no longer stands a chance against the V6-equipped competition in terms of driver engagement.
My preferred engine is the 1.6-liter with the turbocharger mated to the DCT. Its a brilliant little combo, which easily pulls the Sonata briskly around town, yet it sips fuel on the highway to deliver nearly 40 mpg. The engine is smooth and the shifts from the gearbox are nearly imperceptible, an impressive feat given this is a DCT. In manual mode, activated by pulling the transmission lever towards the driver, aggressive shifting has the needle jumping around the tachometer with lightning-quick reflexes. The 3,270-pound Sonata Eco is by no means the enthusiast model, but it has the eager heart of a sport sedan.
All Sonata models share the same suspension, but there are two different braking and steering systems and wheel/tire options. Hyundai has deservedly accepted some criticism over suspension tuning in past years, but its recently launched Genesis sedan proves that its engineering team is on the right track. To bring the 2015 Sonata up to similar speed, the company is using reinforced side and crossmembers to strengthen the new chassis and improve suspension responsiveness. The chassis doesnt just receive more bracing, the automaker says it employs more high-strength steel to net 41-percent stiffer torsional rigidity and 35-percent improved bending resistance, all of which help let the suspension do its work. The chassis employs more high-strength steel to net 41-percent stiffer torsional rigidity and 35-percent improved bending resistance.
Up front are MacPherson struts, with revised subframe bushings, while the rear relies on a redesigned multilink system that employs dual lower arms to increase lateral stability and improve ride quality. Sport 2.0T models feature more aggressively tuned dampers and springs. New geometry makes the sedan more stable under braking (and contributes to a short stopping distance). Glass-smooth asphalt roads thwarted any thorough test of the new underpinnings, but a few dips and railroad crossings hit at above-average speeds revealed an improved and well-controlled ride that could meet, or exceed, best in class. Transitional stability is good, with the Sonata feeling stable through sweepers. Cornering grip is mostly tire limited.
All Sonata models are fitted with four-wheel disc brakes, but the Turbo and Ultimate models arrive with slightly larger rotors (12.6-inch units up front) for a heavier duty cycle. Pedal feel is reassuring at all speeds, with good modulation. I simulated a panic stop from 60 mph and the Sonata stopped straight and in a surprisingly short distance, with ABS clacking away but without much drama. I wish all midsize sedans stopped as well.
Configuring vehicles with more than one steering rack is common in this segment, as automakers choose equipment to keep costs down. All models, with the exception of the Sport 2.0T, arrive with a column-mounted Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) unit. The Sport 2.0T has a premium rack-mounted MDPS, which is tuned for the enthusiast. Both are engine-RPM-sensing for variable effort. Being completely frank, I was unable to sense a difference between the two racks during a full days worth of driving (blame a lack of canyon roads to exercise the Sonata). Both were light and a bit numb in the feedback category, but very stable and nicely weighed on the highway.
Without reservation, I like the new Sonata. After a full day inside its cabin, I emerged with a smile, no aching appendages and at a loss to reveal any glaring negative qualities or traits that would prevent me from recommending it to friends or family. But the midsize sedan category is intimidating. The Sonata competes in an extremely competitive segment that includes the Chevrolet Malibu, Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Mazda6, Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and Volkswagen Passat, and I cant fail to mention its own cousin, the Kia Optima. A glance at each reveals that none are weak adversaries.I emerged with a smile, no aching appendages and at a loss to reveal any glaring negative qualities.
Most would expect Hyundai to counter with an all-new vehicle that follows the path forged by the outgoing model. But rather than introducing a seventh-generation Sonata that pursues its predecessors objective, which was to establish itself as a credible contender in the midsize sedan segment, Hyundai appears to have much more focused ambitions for its new arrival. By putting economy over performance and using the Genesis sedan as its role model, it has tasked the 2015 Sonata with a more important ambition â" going upscale. The resulting four-door sedan is a safe, fuel-efficient, premium offering with an attractive sticker price.

Official Lexus reveals production RC coupe en route to Tokyo
Feast your eyes, ladies and gentlemen, on the new Lexus RC coupe. With the exception of the six-figure LFA supercar, its the first stand-alone two-door model to come from Toyotas premium brand since the demise of the SC, and its coming to the Tokyo Motor Show later this month.
With unmistakably Japanese styling, the Lexus RC is clearly inspired by the LF-CC and LF-LC concepts, and features the brands signature spindle grille. Anyone whos been inside a contemporary Lexus should feel right at home inside the four-seat cabin, where the Japanese automaker has fitted ambient lighting that glows upwards instead of down, coupled with a new Remote Touch Interface.
Lexus has already announced two versions of the coupe: the conventional RC350 with a 3.5-liter gasoline engine and the RC300h with a 2.5-liter hybrid setup. Its all packed into a form that, for comparisons sake, is slightly larger than the new BMW 4 Series but markedly smaller (in every dimension but height) than a 6 Series.
We can expect more details to follow as the Tokyo show approaches, but in the meantime you can scope out the images in the gallery above and the press release below for a closer look.
- Striking concept-to-reality coupe explores new frontiers for Lexus.
- High performance V6 gas and hybrid powertrains accentuate the strong sport-nature of RC.
- New Lexus dedicated coupe with the most aggressive use yet of the iconic spindle grille.
- High contrast interior colors with unique new trim create a drivers cockpit that enhances the fun-to-drive intention of RC.
TOKYO - Nov. 4, 2013 - The all-new Lexus RC coupe will make its world debut at the Tokyo Motor Show on Nov. 20,2013. The press conference will be held at 8:45 a.m. and a live webcast stream of the event will be available at http://www.lexus-int.com.
Two RC models will be displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show â" RC 350 with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, and the RC 300h hybrid with a 2.5-liter engine. Today Lexus released photos of the all-new RC in advance of the world premiere. The RC line brings to life the luxury marques focus on emotional appeal through a dynamic and alluring two-door coupe. It has been developed to raise the brands profile with a broader audience and new-to-Lexus customers. It injects emotional appeal into the Lexus DNA that is synonymous with build quality, refinement and reliability.
Design Exterior
Lexus designers have infused the RC design with deeply contoured lines never before seen in the Lexus line-up. They have integrated the widest and lowest application yet seen of the Lexus spindle grille.
Triangular headlamps evoke the sporty characteristics of the LF-LC styling while concept vehicle inspiration is evident in the unique three-lamp LED design. At low beam, the lamps adopt an L-shaped pattern as an expression of the Lexus identity. The sharp, thin design of the rear combination lamps adopts the symbolic Lexus L-shaped motif.
RCs aluminum wheels continue the concept-to-production design philosophy with two available combinations â" a deeply sculpted 10-spoke 19-inch wheel or a muscular five-spoke 18-inch version, each precision-machined and finished with elegant black and platinum center caps.
A new Lexus painting process that uses multiple layers of clear and deeper-colored coating brings the RC coupe to life with a brighter and more contrasting shade, especially on the racy red exterior.
Design Interior
Highly acclaimed sport concept vehicles have greatly influenced the interior of the RC coupe, with maximum use of contrasting colors, materials and lighting. A purpose-built Lexus-first lighting package provides a great sense of occasion, with illumination that reflects upwards, rather than downwards, to envelop the interior. High contrast interior trim, including a new tone called Clove, emphasize design lines and accentuate the elegant cabin. Genuine shimamoku wood highlights â" the result of an intense, layered wood production technique refined by Lexus â" are used to emphasize the surrounding trim.
The drivers cockpit is divided into operational and display zones. The upper zone houses the instrument panel and a seven-inch navigation screen while a layered center console integrates a new Lexus first Remote Touch Interface.
Important for a coupe, the seats utilize an integrated foaming construction method â" much like the molding of racing seats â" to ensure optimum occupant comfort and support.

Study Audi claims America unfairly pushes electrics over diesels backed by survey
Audi, in case you havent noticed, is quite committed to diesel technology. It champions oil burners in both the racing world and to consumers, offering American customers a total of five diesel-powered models, which is more than any brand in the US market save for its parent company, Volkswagen. In a bid to prove that diesels arent some passing trend and are actually gaining momentum in the US, Audi commissioned Harris Interactive to conduct a poll of 1,600 American drivers, to see how they felt about diesel power. The resulting statistics are rather surprising.
- 57 percent of the 1,629 drivers surveyed think the government has unfairly favored hybrids and electrics over diesel power
- 65 percent of drivers support laws being passed to make diesel more accessible, while 66 percent support tax incentives for diesel-powered vehicles
- 59 percent of drivers, aged 18 to 34, say theyd consider a diesel if fuel prices were on par with gasoline
- 39 percent of people over 45 say theyd consider a diesel if prices leveled out
The study shines a light on some popular opinions on diesel technology, and shows that, were the circumstances right, the torque-tastic powerplants might be able to enjoy the same degree of popularity in the US that they have in Europe.
Audi of Americas president, Scott Keogh, had this to say:
"Government has set very rigorous standards for future fuel economy, and we believe that clean diesel is perfectly positioned to help us achieve those goals. But, we argue that diesel needs an even playing field set by state and federal governments. Audi believes there are a variety of viable alternative fuel solutions, including electric, but diesel is readily available today. If you take away the disincentives that state and federal taxation policy create, we potentially could see a big uptick in clean diesel vehicles sales."
Now, well admit, were taking these statistics with a grain of salt. While its true Audi used a third-party surveyor, the fact remains that these sort of stats are very, very positive, which is a rather convenient outcome. Of course, if these figures are accurate, the prospects for diesel technology in the US seem even better than wed ever hoped. You can read the entire press release from Audi down below. As always, wed like to know what you think. Take part in our unofficial poll.
⢠Survey conducted by Harris Interactive among over 1,600 American drivers to gain insight into clean diesel perception and adoption
⢠66% of drivers think the government should offer a tax incentive on clean diesel vehicles
⢠59% of 18-34 year old drivers said that if the cost of diesel fuel was on par with gasoline, they would purchase a diesel-powered vehicle
A new poll conducted online by Harris Interactive on behalf of Audi of America reveals that a majority of American drivers would support government initiatives aimed at spurring clean diesel vehicle sales in the U.S. The study was conducted in September, 2013 among 2,041 U.S. adults, among whom 1,629 identified themselves as regular drivers, driving their own personal vehicle at least once a once week or more often.
Long viewed as "the other" fuel, clean diesel in the U.S. is quickly becoming a viable everyday fuel choice for drivers seeking increased efficiency and performance.
Audi continues to be at the forefront of clean diesel with a dramatic expansion of new TDI® clean diesel offerings: the 2014 A8L, A7, A6, Q7 and Q5 models. Clean diesel delivers up to 30% better fuel economy and 12% to 30% lower carbon dioxide emissions than gasoline engines.
However, obstacles to mass adoption still exist. In fact, survey results show that 65% of American drivers would be in support of lawmakers efforts to make diesel more accessible to the American public; and 66% of drivers think the government should offer a tax incentive on clean diesel vehicles.
"Government has set very rigorous standards for future fuel economy, and we believe that clean diesel is perfectly positioned to help us achieve those goals. But, we argue that diesel needs an even playing field set by state and federal governments," said Scott Keogh, President, Audi of America. "Audi believes there are a variety of viable alternative fuel solutions, including electric, but diesel is readily available today. If you take away the disincentives that state and federal taxation policy create, we potentially could see a big uptick in clean diesel vehicles sales."
Governments bet on electric vehicles viewed as unfair by American drivers
A majority (57%) of American drivers feel the government has unfairly placed its bets in favor of hybrids and electrics over clean diesel vehicles, the survey also showed.
Unlike electric vehicles, with clean diesel there is no need for driver behavior change, except to move from one pump to the other, and no need for big infrastructure changes.
"I do believe that diesel owners should be included in alternative energy tax incentives. Most diesel owners buy the car for the increased gas mileage, and we deserve to be rewarded for our change in behavior in using an alternate fuel just as hybrid drivers are," said Stephanie Lewis, Audi TDI clean diesel owner since 2010.
Certain states provide HOV access to hybrid vehicles, while no states provide HOV access to clean diesel vehicles. HOV lanes are made for long-distance driving, better suited to clean diesel vehicles.
Clean diesel viewed as an innovative technology for younger American drivers
Survey results also showed that 59% of 18-34 year old drivers said that if the cost of diesel fuel was on par with gasoline, they would purchase a diesel-powered vehicle. Conversely, only 39% of those 45+ said they would purchase a diesel car over a gas car if there was fuel price parity.
"One of the reasons we are seeing this disparity between age groups may be because younger generations dont have the same misconceptions about diesel as older generations," added Keogh. "The objective is to reward efficiency, and diesel is an efficient alternative available today. We need to level the playing field."

2015 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell
Hyundai leased its first Tucson Fuel Cell crossover last week, which the automaker claims makes it the first mass-produced fuel cell vehicle (FCV) that has been offered to the public (Honda may have something to say about that...). The vehicle, which consumes hydrogen and emits only clean water vapor from its exhaust pipe, will initially only be offered for lease in Los Angeles and Orange Counties â" two regions with the greatest density of approved hydrogen stations in the country â" at a monthly fee of $499. Since the Tucson FCV rolls down the same Ulsan, Korea, production line as its gasoline-powered relative, production is scalable based on customer demand.
We attended the festivities with the dignitaries and elected officials - clapping until our hands hurt. But once it was ove r, we grabbed a set of keys and took the new FCV for a half-hour jaunt. According to the press materials, written with a welcomed sense of humor, Hyundai will offer it in three colors: white, white and optional white. Our test model was the latter.
Driving Notes
- The outside of the FCV is difficult to distinguish from the combustion version, until one gets close enough to see the "Hydrogen EV" cladding on the sides, the "Blue Drive" on the front doors or the "Fuel Cell" on the rear liftgate. The lack of exhaust pipe (one exists, but it is tucked out of view) is another giveaway. Subtle aero improvements have dropped the coefficient of drag from 0.37 to 0.35 (overall length, width and height are essentially identical between the models).
- Hyundai has hidden two 10,000-psi Kevlar-wrapped tanks inside the Tucson Fuel Cell. The larger tank is just aft of the rear axle, with its dome raising the rear decklid floor by a couple inches (nearly imperceptible). The smaller tank is located just in front of the rear axle, beneath the passenger seats in the space normally occupied by a gasoline tank. The tanks are bulletproof â" literally â" having been tested for burst, drop, and gunfire resistance. If there is a leak, hydrogen sensors will alert occupants (there is a flush rectangular sensor on the roof of the cabin, just behind the drivers head near the dome light). If there is a fire, a pressure-release valve will vent the hydrogen in a controlled manner to prevent damage from overpressure.
- In operation, a fuel cell vehicle acts and drives much like an electric vehicle. The Tucson Fuel Cell driver faces a familiar two-pod instrument cluster, with an analog charge/power dial on the left and an analog speedometer on the right. Set inside the power dial is a digital segment temperature gauge for the coolant. While electric vehicles typically dont have coolant, the FCV uses the liquid to cool its fuel stack and electronics. The digital segment fuel level gauge, set inside the speedometer, displays the balance of hydrogen in the tank. A digital multifunction display, between the two dials, offers trip computer information and instant MPGe readings.
- The standard Tucson Limited FWD, with a 2.4-liter combustion engine, tips the scales at 3,294 pounds. Brace yourself, as the Tucson Fuel Cell is a whopping 807 pounds heavier. Hyundai engineers note swapping the gasoline engine for a fuel stack under the front hood is virtually a wash, and the two Kevlar-wrapped fuel tanks dont add much weight. The bulk of the added mass comes from the 24-kW lithium polymer battery pack. Normally, packing on that much weight has negative effects on driving dynamics - but not this time. The low-slung and compact weight (all situated below the passenger cabin) acts like a ballast inertia damper, countering the bouncing and jarring effects of driving down the road. Unlike its combustion-powered sibling, which can follow undulations in the pavement, the Tucson Fuel Cell glides like a silent electric limousine.
- Compared to its combustion sibling, the Tucson Fuel Cell falls 48 horsepower shy, and it has all of that aforementioned mass to lug around. Have no worries, as the FCVs torque output is 44 pound-feet greater, and its available right off the bat. While a 0-60 time of about 11.5 seconds wont cause whiplash, the emission-free crossover feels rather zippy between 15 and 45 miles per hour, which is likely where it will spend most of its time. It is expectedly lethargic off the line, and overtaking at highway speeds requires a bit of planning, but if you keep it in the sweet spot, its rather enjoyable.
- Hyundai fits the FCV with slightly larger front disc brakes (to accommodate the increased curb weight) that are part of a regenerative braking system that pumps energy back into the battery pack. Brake feel is okay, but the driver is definitely aware of the two-tons beneath his jeans. The steering, with slightly different ratios, is overboosted, light and uncommunicative â" but it adds to the sense of isolation, so many will approve. Transitional handling is safe and predictable, but unexciting â" anyone who shows up at an autocross with a Tucson Fuel Cell crossover is lost.
- Government officials in California havent figured out how to properly charge for hydrogen fuel (once they develop a pump that can reliably weigh the fuel while dispensing, expect it to be sold by the kilogram), so Tucson Fuel Cell owners enjoy free fuel from six Los Angeles-area stations during the term of their lease. The programs are capped at 12,000 miles a year, so owners wont break the bank. Each of the stations is equipped with a 700-bar pump fitted with a WEH TK17 pistol-grip nozzle that is held just like a common gasoline/diesel nozzle. Once the female nozzle is connected securely to the male nipple on the vehicle, an infrared ring around the nozzle communicates data wirelessly with the vehicle during fueling â" it is clean and very high tech. At todays dispensing rates, it takes about 10 minutes to fill an empty "tank" (two tanks, actually). A full tank, which is 12.4 pounds of hydrogen, delivers a range of about 265 miles.
If you are an Angelino seeking a no-compromise emissions-free vehicle, the Koreans may have just written your hydrogen song.

Best Car Reviews YouTube BBC America and Magazines
3. Car&Driver Magazine
I am 100% subscribed to this wonderful magazine and I find their reviews very in depth, helpful, and overall somewhat personal. For example, they reviewed the Mercedes-Benz GL63 in the February 2013 issue, and I could completely relate to what they said: Great noise, plenty of power, but isnt AMGy-enough to be worth the $110,000 base price.
2. SaabKyle04
I am also subsribed to the YouTube channel SaabKyle04, which is the largest collection of automotive reviews on YouTube today. His reviews are incredibly in depth and carefully planned out that sometimes, I have to watch them in parts because since they are so in depth, they are usually abbout 30-40 minutes long. But his channel is veryimpressive, with over 1,500 videos.
1. Top Gear
As the most popular TV show on the planet, Top Gear is so entertaining that even people who dont like cars watch it. Now on their 21st season, the show is actually a reboot from the 70s. The first season was presented by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and Jason Dawe. In the second season, Jason was replaced by James May, nicknamed "Captain Slow." They also have the hardcore track driver "The Stig" who wears a white track driving suit, a white helmat, and he never says a word. But their reviews are very understandable, but at the same time, remain extremely fun to watch and worth an hour of your time.

Motorsports Former F1 drivers line up for Formula E
For every new driver who makes his way into Formula One, theres another who ends up flunking out, left to find a drive in another racing series. Fortunately theres no shortage of racing disciplines eager to lure a former grand prix pilot to their ranks. And soon therell be one more.
Thatd be the nascent FIA Formula E Championship, the electric racing series thats set to kick off later this year. Organizers have already finalized the calendar and announced the teams set to take part. Theyve even demoed the car in public. All thats left is to line up the drivers, and thats just what theyre doing.
Although the series and its teams arent quite ready to announce their driver lineups just yet, they have launched what theyre calling the Formula E Drivers Club. The list is made up of accomplished drivers, many of whom have raced in F1, support the idea of electric racing and are ready to get behind the wheel.
The roster includes former F1 drivers Sebastien Buemi, Karun Chandhok, Tonio Liuzzi, Takuma Sato and Lucas di Grassi (whos been serving as test driver for the SRT_01E thats set to become the backbone of the series). Other members of the club include IndyCar scion Marco Andretti, F3 and DTM racer Adrien Tambay and former F1 test driver Ma Quing Hua. A further ten drivers are set to be announced over the course of the coming weeks, which is a good thing, because with ten teams each to field two cars, theyre going to need at least (hold on while we dust of the abacus)... twenty drivers in place come September when the first race kicks off in Beijing.
Top international drivers from F1, IndyCar and sportscar show support for new global electric race series
LONDON, UK (8, January 2014) â" The FIA Formula E Championship has today revealed the first eight drivers to show their support for the new fully-electric race series by signing up to its official Formula E Drivers Club.
Sebastien Buemi, Marco Andretti, Karun Chandhok, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Adrien Tambay, Ma Qing Hua, Lucas di Grassi and Takuma Sato have all committed to the new scheme, giving their official endorsement to the championship together with their willingness to race in the future. The new scheme will also give them the opportunity to experience track time in new Spark-Renault SRT_01E Formula E car, designed by Spark Racing Technologies together with a consortium of the leading names in motorsport including Dallara, McLaren, Williams, Renault and Michelin.
"Were delighted to be starting the New Year, which of course is a very important one for Formula E, on such a positive note by announcing our new Drivers Club," said Alejandro Agag, CEO of series promoters Formula E Holdings. "From the very beginning, we have set out to deliver great racing to fans across the globe and to do that you need high calibre drivers. Now that weve announced all 10 teams, everyone is keen to find out who the drivers will be. Of course, we cannot confirm any drivers just yet as it will be down to the individual teams to select who fills their seats. However, we hope by offering them a pool of top international drivers to choose from â" all of whom support the new series â" we can deliver on this promise of providing close, entertaining racing in city-centres around the world. We also hope it will showcase to fans, TV broadcasters and potential sponsors the high profile names Formula E is attracting and the level of drivers they can expect to see race come September."
Of the first eight names, Switzerlands Sebastien Buemi, Indian driver Karun Chandhok, Italys Vitantonio Liuzzi, Lucas di Grassi from Brazil and Japanese driver Takuma Sato have all previously raced in Formula One, while Chinas Ma Qing Hua has been a test driver for both HRT and Caterham F1. Meanwhile, USA racer Marco Andretti â" son of the legendary Michael Andretti â" is one of IndyCars top drivers finishing fifth in 2013, while Frenchman Adrien Tambay has raced in Formula 3, GP3, Formula Renault 3.5 and more recently DTM. A further 10 drivers will be revealed over the coming weeks via the championships official website www.fiaformulae.com.
"Im very happy to be a part of the new Formula E Drivers Club," said Sebastien Buemi. "Motorsport should be seen to be the leader in developing and pushing new sustainable technologies so it will be great to see how this will influence not only motorsport but future road cars and the environment. The calendar is very strong and brings the racing to the fans, and the new Formula E car looks like it will be a lot of fun to drive."
Marco Andretti said: "This revolutionary racing series, paired with some of the worlds best drivers, competing in top cities, will set a new standard for motorsport. The advanced technology is exciting. Im not entirely sure what to expect but, for me, that is the most interesting part of this experience â" the unknown factor. Im looking forward to the growth and development of Formula E and am happy to be named as part of the Drivers Club. Im really looking forward to getting into the cockpit of one of these cars."
Karun Chandhok said: "Alejandro Agag has been a friend of mine for a number of years since our time in GP2. Ive been speaking with him since the early days of Formula E and Im very happy to be a part of the Drivers Club for the series. The calendar looks great, as do the cars and it should be a great new way to go motor racing."
Takuma Sato added: "I am very excited to be a part of the Drivers Club for the development of the Formula E cars. This series provides a huge potential for the future of motor racing and electric cars. I am sure that these fascinating new innovative multimedia contents will excite the new fans who will be watching this new series."
Todays announcement also means that Lucas di Grassi will no longer act as the only official Formula E test driver.
Formula E is a new FIA Championship using electric single-seater race cars capable of speeds in excess of 225km/h. The series will compete in the heart of 10 of the worlds leading cities including London, Miami and Beijing. Ten teams, each with two drivers, will go head-to-head to create a unique and exciting racing series designed to appeal to a new generation of motorsport fan whilst accelerating the electric vehicle market and promoting sustainability.
